"The Artist" actress will be hosting at this year's festival
It’s a delicate affair, no doubt: the job of master or mistress of ceremonies at the Cannes Film Festival is closely scrutinised by observers in the media each year – a great honour and a poisoned chalice in equal measure. This year, the choice of writers for the famous closing speech remains one of the top priorities for the leading lady of the night.
Last year, it was the waif-like Mélanie Laurent (you may remember her as the young cinema-owner from “Inglorious Basterds” a few years ago) who delivered a speech written by playwright and actor Nicolas Bedos. This year, Bérénice Bejo will officiate and will be using the creative services of two people who are very much in view at the moment.
The choice of Kyan Khojandi and Bruno Muschio is bound to be a popular one, given the success of their short Canal+ programme called “Bref“. The pair have the responsibility of delivering to the Oscar nominee and César winner (both for her work in “The Artist”). She seems to have every confidence in their abilities to do a perfect job:
“They have a very bonne plume,” she said, “very subtle. It’s important to find a certain harmony, almost like in the chorus of a song.”The actress also confided that she didn’t want her director-husband Michel Hazanavicius (who directed her in the afore-mentioned “The Artist”) to write her speech for her.
Yesterday, the line-up for the Cannes Film Festival was announced. As usual, it’s a picaresque and interesting mixture, including British actor Ewan McGregor and French actress Emmanuelle Devos, alongside something of a joker in the pack in the form of eccentric designer and former “Eurotrash” presenter Jean-Paul Gaultier. They are amongst the ones who will award the coveted Palme d’Or for the 65th Cannes Film Festival.
I had to have a look at the clips from “Bref” out of curiosity. Very bold! You wouldn’t get away with that sort of naughtiness on RTE.
Podge and Rodge do…
