Although its use goes back to Ancient Greece, there are few hairstyles considered more French than the chignon. It’s event fun pronouncing its name.
For the spring/summer trends being set this very week on the catwalks of Paris, the chignon is definitely back with a bang.
But there are chignons and there are chignons. Tootlafrance has a look at 20 (yes, 20!) chignons for your pleasure…
- Chignon Décontracté (Relaxed Chignon): You’re looking for a beautiful hairdo without spending hours at the salon? Go for this relaxed version – the lightly-braided chignon allows for hair to fall in a seductive “neglige” effect
- Chignon Crêpé: Christian Dior rides the fine line between structure and natural forms with this version. The beauty team gave a fresh look to this chignon by adding a “wet” effect.
- Chignon Macaron (macaroon): Sitting alone on top of the head, this chignon gives volume to your hairdo and reveals more of the face. Toned down makeup completes an elegant look. Don’t forget to let a few strands of hair escape so that it’s not formal or severe.
- Chignon Tressé: Very much in vogue on the catwalks, this chignon looks equally impressive from behind as from the front. It can go equally well with a look that’s bohemian or formal. A romantic date or a formal ball – this will cover both adequately.
- Chignon Noeud (Knot): Quite minimalist but very elegant and as used by Stephane Rolland on his show, this fine chignon is close to the back of the neck for an elegant look that will work well with strongly highlighted eyes.
- The Chignon Sauvage: Somewhere between retro and modern, this explosive cut is going off all over the catwalks this season. The “bombed” hair on top lets some strands escape for a voluminous effect. This winter, don’t hide your mane – let the world see it!
- Chignon Bas (Lower): A great classic among chignon looks, the hair is up in a chignon that is at the level of the nape. For a more original take, loosen some of the hair on top and add some gel for an “aerial” dimension to your chignon.
- Chignon en Fleur (Flower): This sophisticated version brings a little bit of summer to your hair. Taking the hair away from the face, it’s one for either day or night.
- Chignon Romantique: A classic and very pretty look, the hair to one side gives gentle movement to the hairdo and the fringe covers much of the forehead – the look of a modern-day princess.
- Chignon Coque: Son Jung Wan set the catwalk alight with this head-turner take on the chignon. Get noticed with a combination of defined strokes on the make-up front
- Chignon Aérien: The aerial look is very chic and gives maximum body to the standard chignon. Although well worked, the effect is vary natural because of the broad sweeps of hair.
- Chignon Arty: With Nanette Lepore, the arty look is achieved by gathering up the hair on top, twisting and gathering to one side. A real turn-on at ceremonies, this look puts the accent firmly on the face and make-up.
- Chignon 60s: Who can ever forget such a great decade? A look that’s always in fashion in any age, from Brigitte Bardot to Amy Winehouse.
- Chignon de Dame: Possibly one of the best chignons for long hair, this look is given volume by a lightly creped effect.
- Chignon Danseuse: Even if you’re not a ballerina, this look is tasty as well quick to put together. It’s also highly adaptable and can be worn high up or lower down
- Chignon Graphique: Looking for a well-worked look? Who not dare to try this. The hair is in two parts, offering volume and refinement. This is one to try on a special occasion, such as a wedding.
- Chignon Flou (Blurred): Simple but elegant, this look is easy to obtain and will adapt just as easily to a relaxed look as to a refined one – ideal solution for those in a hurry.
- Chignon Tombant: the “Falling” chignon is undeniably romantic and is ideal for those looking for a change of look without wanting to go too far. The lengths are braided and then knotted in a gorgeous chignon and the fringe falling elegantly to the side gives a great touch of sophistication
- Chignon Banane: This hairdo swells and then is tucked in behind for a striking look that’s structured and sassy.
- Chignon PPQ: Presented on the PPQ show during the Autumn-Winter collection week, this elegant look has a s wide appeal, that is easily accessorised by adding a ribbon to colour-coordinate.
