As the superb online French Film Festival continues through Volta.ie, the nominees line-up for the annual César awards was announced today

“Timbuktu” by Abderrahmane Sissako (pictured above second from left with cast at last year’s Cannes Film Festival) and Bertrand Bonellos’s biopic “Saint Laurent” were expected to be in the mix in the Best Film category, but some of the more surprising announcements included the comedy “La Famille Bélier” by Eric Lartigau and “Les Combattants (Fighters)”, Thomas Cailley’s debut feature.

The other nominations for Meilleur Film are “Hippocrate (Hippocrates)” by Thomas Lilti, “Sils Maria (Clouds of Sils Maria)” by d’Olivier Assaya and “Eastern Boys” by Robin Campillo (a new release and available to view now on Volta.ie).

In the Best Actor category, there are two competing actors playing the same role: Gaspard Ulliel and Pierre Niney play the late designer Yves Saint Laurent in the films “Saint Laurent” and “Yves Saint Laurent” respectively. The other actors in contention are Guillaume Canet (in “La Prochaine Fois je Viserai le Coeur/ Next Time I’ll aim for the Heart”), Niels Arestrup (“Diplomatie/Diplomacy”), François Damiens (“La Famille Bélier”), Romain Duris (“Une Nouvelle Amie/ The New Girlfriend”) and Vincent Lacoste (“Hippocrate”).

The Best Actress nominations are Juliette Binoche (“Sils Maria”), Marion Cotillard for “Deux jours, une nuit” (also nominated in the US for an Academy Award), Karine Viard in “La Famille Bélier”, Adèle Haenel in “Les Combattants”, veteran actress Catherine Deneuve in “Dans la cour”, Emilie Dequenne in “Pas son genre” and Sandrine Kiberlain in “Elle l’adore”.

The grand ceremony for the César Awards takes place on the 20th of February in Paris.
