Market Guide: Bouches-du-Rhône – Arles

The ancient Roman city of Arles has much to recommend about it: It’s impressive Roman ruins still put on bloody shows for entertainment (bull-fights), as well as mock gladiatorial contests; its winding streets are a joy to explore; it is as thorough a Van Gogh city as one can possibly have; it’s the place where the oldest person that ever lived led her long life.

The diet here is healthy and you can see why when you frequent one of its two markets. The main one is on every Saturday throughout the year from 08:00 to 13:00. Extending for over 2kms on Boulevard des Lices, it’s a head-spinning parade of fresh produce, fish, meat, honey, local specialities, flowers, clothing, shoes and everything else. This one is regarded as the showcase for the benefit of Arles and the rest of the region and the world that finds itself here.

The Wednesday market is regarded as more of a local market on Boulevard Emile Combes. Also running throughout the year from 08:00 to 13:00, it’s a smaller version of the Saturday one and with more intense banter between the colourful traders.

Finally, if you find yourself in Arles on the first Wednesday of any month throughout the year, watch out for the monthly flea market on Boulevard des Lices, when traders from all over the surrounding area descend and set up stall to offer furniture, books, trinkets and other rarities to pore over or take back home with you.
