France’s oldest city and largest port has a long tradition of trading that goes back to Phoenician times. It’s no wonder, then, that Marseille has many wonderful markets.
It’s also France’s 2nd-largest city (in terms of its official population), so the number of markets is large. The principal ones below are listed by market type.
The Main Markets:
– Marché du Prado: With lots of food and of everything else besides, this market is the show-piece of the city and extends along a lovely area in the centre of town close to the sea, taking place at the Avenue du Prado and the Rond-point Castellane every day except Sunday from 07:00 to 13:30.
– The Fish Market: Traditionally, it’s the fishermen’s wives who compete amongst one another to see who can sound the most hysterical in a colourful and noisy market of the type that you won’t find anywhere in Ireland. Every day at the Quai de la Fraternité from 08:00 to 13:00.
