The little communes of La Palmyre and Les Mathes are in a flat area of sand and forest just north-west of Royan. The relaxed ambiance, cycling facilities and the presence of excellent camp-sites in the area, the lovely beaches and the excellent zoo all combine to make it one of the most beloved of destinations for Irish people going on holiday to France over the last 20 years.
There are four markets in this seaside location: For the summer months of June, July and August, the seasonal market of Les Mathes takes place in the centre of the village every day except Wednesday and Sunday from 08:00 to 13:00. Typically, it’s food and local produce for sale in a lively summery atmosphere.
On Fridays, there is a slightly bigger market at the same spot but which goes on throughout the year from 08:00 to 13:00, whilst on Wednesdays, there’s another seasonal market from 08:00 to 13:00 but which runs from April to September inclusive.
On Sundays, there is also a market – this time in La Palmyre, which is where a lot of Irish holidaymakers are generally based. This open-air market is from 08:00 to 13:00 also and is more gift-oriented.
