If you’re on holiday in this part of Charente-Maritime (as thousands of Irish holidaymakers do every year), then Marennes is a place that you might tend to pass by on your way to a beach or onto the offshore Île d’Oléron. Its strikingly tall Gothic church (Eglise Saint-Pierre) dominates the skyline in this whole area and many might be surprised at how pretty its small centre is. It was a place of wealth and trade in bygone centuries and even today, it is the centre of a very busy oyster trade in this part of the Charente-Maritime.
The market is a good excuse to come and explore Marennes. There are plenty of fresh oysters and other seafood on offer every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 08:00 to 13:00 at the Place des Halles throughout the year.
