Although it’s more famous for both its Christmas market (officially the best in Europe) and the seat of the European Parliament, there are some lovely regular markets in this city of 300,000 people.

The Neudorf market is one of the principal ones, taking place every Tuesday and Saturday morning on the Place du Marché. Here, the market is both open-air and under shelter, with artisan craftsmen and food producers, local food producers and organic food producers. The neatly organised fair definitely has a strong emphasis on regional produce and includes fishmongers, charcuterie, cheese-mongers, several market gardeners, Italian and Asian specialities and bakers… to name a few.

To the west of Strasbourg city centre, the area knowns as Cronenbourg is a good spot for markets that take place on the Place de Haldenbourg and Rue de Pfettisheim every Wednesday and Friday morning from 07:00 to 13:00. Then, over on Rue Jacob, there is another market that takes place on Thursday afternoons. They’re all great places for buying direct from the food producers and the market series is also known as the “Cronenbourg-Jacob Market” and the food markets are supplemented by a local flea market that takes place here on Rue de la Rotonde, with good tram access to the “Rotonde” tram stop.

A market of a more bric-a-brac variety takes place between place de l’Etal and Place de la Grande Boucherie at the corner of Rue de la Douane every Wednesday and Friday from 07:00 right up to 16:00. Here, you’ll find about 50 stalls or less of the flea-market variety.

What else would you expect to find on the Place du Marché aux Poissons only fish! Every Saturday morning, this is the place to come to in a pretty setting by the river. The local produce here is fresh and inviting and includes much more than just fish – fruits, vegetables, cheeses, charcuterie… just let yourself go.

Finally, there’s the open-air book market that takes place throughout the year every Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday morning. It’s really a bit like a get-together of about ten dedicated bouquinistes, but don’t let that put you off it! It takes place in a smart city-centre location on Place Gutenberg and Rue Gutenberg, as well as Rue des Hallebardes. Small though it may be, there is quite a collection of books of every sort, many specialist of the region. You’ll also find BD books, collectors’ stamps, postcards telephone cards and old coins.
