Market Guide: Pyrénées-Orientales – Argelès-sur-Mer

Located in the heart of an area beside the Mediterranean Spanish border that has gained a rapid growth in popularity amongst Irish going on holiday to France, Argelès-sur-Mer has the longest beach in the area, so it was always destined to get busy with tourists at some point.

Today’s sunny seaside resort is lively and relaxed through the summer. The sand at the beach isn’t the softest but it’s beautiful and the vermilion coast is famous for clean water and great snorkelling spots.

All through the year, there is a market on Place de la République, Place St Côme and St Damien et Avenue de la Libération in the old village part (as opposed to the now-larger resort end). This takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning from 07:00 to 13:00. It’s a traditional affair with about 60 stalls.

In summer, a number of markets are added to the calendar:

From 14th of June to the 24th of September, there’s a market every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 07:00 to 13:00 on the Parking des Platanes and Avenue des Platanes in Argelès-Plage; a traditional-style market with about 100 stalls.

From June 14th to September 26th and also in Argelès-Plage, there’s the Petite Poste market every day from 07:30 to 12:30 on the Boulevard de la Mer. Ten or so stalls set up here.

From the 15th of June to the 21st of September, there’s a market on Place du Nouveau Monde at the port every Tuesday from 07:30 to 12:30. This is made up of about 20 local producers selling foodstuffs typical of the region.

From the 17th of June to the 23rd of September, there’s another market in the port area on Place du Nouveau Monde every Thursday from 07:30 to 12:30. It’s a traditional on with about 60 representatives.

From the 30th of June until the 28th of August, there’s the relatively short summer run for the night-time market on the quays of the port. It takes place every Tuesday and Friday evening from 17:00 until midnight, with about 50 stalls selling a variety of wares, including a strong representation of craft produce, art, jewellery, art deco objets d’art, African tresses, etc.

Finally, there’s another night-time market of similar nature every night during the summer (from the 15th of June to the 15th of September) from 17:00 to midnight on the Parking des Platanes and the Avenue des Platanes at Argelès-Plage with about 40 stalls.
