Markets: Dordogne – Ribérac

riberac.jpg

The historical Dordogne is also known to a lot of locals under its older name of Périgord. It’s a department that feels, in parts, like little has changed since the Middle Ages and one of the region’s biggest markets takes place every Friday in the little town of Ribérac.

It’s a great mixed market selling a whole variety of produce. Vendors are up to 250 in number and come from the Dordogne and some neighbouring departments to sell clothing, souvenirs, fresh fruit and vegetables. But the Dordogne is also gastronomic heaven (where in France isn’t, says you?) and you’ll also find spices, truffles (a real local speciality), cheeses and a bewildering mouth-watering choice in meat, making this market a real foodies’ paradise.

Every Friday morning throughout the year on the Place de la Liberté from 08:00 to 13:00, the main market takes place, with another on Tuesday morning for local producers from 08:00 to 12:00 from April to October inclusive.
