Considered one of the top ten markets in France, the outstanding feature here is the livestock section.
Every Monday, you can savour the full-on French market experience, complete with great traditional foods of the area and Burgundy wine, but all to the accompaniment of honking geese, squawking ducks, clucking chickens, grunting guinea pigs and yodelling peacocks.
It’s a modest-sized town by French standards but it’s pretty and its arcaded streets on the Grande Rue give a hint of its important mediaeval-era past.
It’s along the Grande Rue, the Place de l’Hotel de Ville and even as far as the Place de la Charité that the main event takes place every Monday throughout the year from 08:00 to 13:00. With over 250 stalls, it’s officially classified as the fourth-largest agricultural market in all of France. As a side-show, there’s also an organic market running in tandem on Rue de la Grenette, while on Easter Monday and other bank-holiday Mondays, the market extends to everything else under the sun all day long.
