Sète is one of the most magnetically charming towns on the French Mediterranean coast. It enjoys an interesting location, juxtapositioned between the lagoon of the Étang de Thau, the starting point of the Canal du Midi and the Mediterranean sea. It all adds to the charm of the place which has become known as the Venice of Languedoc. The town also has a mixture of working port and summer resort that gives a happy-go-lucky fresh and authentic feel and you always get the impression that it’s a place you’ve “discovered”.
The main covered market is on daily throughout the year at Les Halles Centrales on Rue Gambetta from 06:00 to 13:00. Here, you’ll find a great mixture of food products from both the land and sea that are typical of the region.
There are more markets than that, of course. The large traditional outdoor market is another year-rounder that’s on every Wednesday morning from 07:00 to 13:00. This covers threes areas, each with its own class of produce for sale. So, on Rue Artiside-Bertrand, it’s a textile bazaar; the food market is on Rue Gambetta and Rue Alsace-Lorraine; Place Léon Blum in front of the Town Hall, meanwhile, is preserved for the flower market.
There are further seasonal markets in Sète from the beginning of June to the end of September. These include a local food produce market on Thursday mornings at Place Edouard Herriot, a clothes-and-food market on Friday mornings at Place Stalingrad and Avenue Victor Hugo and a three smaller flea markets on Sundays at Place de la République, Quai des Moulins and Rue des Goélands. You can enhance the entire experience by getting a shuttle boat across the lagoon, arriving in style at the Venice of Languedoc. From June to September, the regular service costs just €1 and departs from the Mas Coulet, where there is free parking.
